Nonthaburi 2 Roi Et Utd 2 (Nonthaburi win 8-7 on pens)

How we roll

All photo credits: Bank Kammo

Nonthaburi entered round three (also known as the first round proper, just like the English counterpart) last Wednesday after making life a little hard.

Roi Et United took an impressive amount of fans south to Nonthaburi and roared their team on but it was the home side who drew first blood midway through the first half with a goal by Traore following a run from midfield.

The lead was extended after a goalkeeping mistake gifted Tomi a chance, but the English forward still had to keep his composure to finish and he did so.

The game should have been killed off but substitutions changed the flow of the game and Roi Et saw a lot more possession in the final thirty minutes of action, culminating in an injury time equaliser that sent the team and its fans wild.
Everyone got stuck in

As with the previous round, a draw after 90 minutes meant we went straight to penalties. What with the last minute equaliser, our previous penalty win, the surrender of a two goal lead and the fact that Roi Et did not, as far as I know, have any English fans in their end all made me feel that our luck was exhausted. Yet Roi Et missed their first penalty and suddenly it all started to feel like a repeat of the previous cup game. Less so when we missed our second penalty.

From then on it was a heart-stopping, nerve-jangling collection of well-taken penalties from both sides until ...YES! Roi Et miss penalty number seven (if my memory serves me well).

And then we miss our penalty, too. It's that horrid feeling in your gut that hits you when this happens.

So here comes their next name on the list and...YEEEESSSSS! Roi Et miss penalty no.eight!

And then my favourite moment of the game. Our number 14 (Athikun) walked over to the penalty spot. Of course this was sudden death so he had not volunteered to take a penalty and perhaps was just a tad nervous. He looked over to the fans, saw them roaring him on and clenched his fist. I don’t know why, but it was good to see.

He scored. We won. Great job Athikun!

Despite everything that happened - I haven’t even mentioned Cedric sacrificing himself via a late tactical foul that earned him his second yellow of the game - this match wasn’t a classic by any means, thanks in no small part to yet another ref who believes that a strong official has to blow his whistle at least once every ten seconds.  Yet the penalty shoot out was as tense as any I‘ve witnessed and it’s worth noting that even with players like Alasanne playing less than half the game we still managed to overcome a team sitting 3rd in the North East table.

Keep up the great form, lads. If we draw a D1 team at home in the next round, I fancy an upset.

Nonthaburi 1 Pathum Thani United 1 (Eka win on penalties) - Report

Pathanphong celebrates the shoot-out win
(Credit:Nitinont Image & GraphicStudio )

Nonthaburi broke a long-running cup jinx and finally made it over the first hurdle of a knockout competition with a win over PTU that was as close as the full time score suggests.

Nonthaburi made a few changes to their regular line up, resting Tomi and Alassane and trying out new players such as Asiriya (no.24), who had an excellent second half.

Eka had more possession but struggled to pass through a packed PTU midfield and the visitors opened the scoring midway through the first half with a breakway goal that saw Pathanphong beaten at his far post. The lead was short lived however, as a superb long pass (see the vid) was matched in quality by the lob from no.12, Atapon to even the score.

After half time Nonthaburi introduced Alssane, whose link-up play with John really changed the game. Still the second goal was elusive so, under Thai FA Cup rules, the game went straight to penalties.

PTU netted their first penalty but missed their next three, allowing the home side a win we probably deserved.Credit to both teams for behaving professionally through the shoot-out and well done to the lads for another good game and, finally, a cup win!

Eka will now play Roi Et at home next Wednesday (KO said to be @ 1530 but subject to change) in the second round. The big boys are just one win away.

Happy days! Cup win and big signing

image owned by thaileaguefootball.com

If you're an Eka fan, get out and buy your lottery ticket. The boys managed to pull off the rarest of feats - a victory in a cup game - in midweek with a 5-3 win over non league Korat FC, The game did not go to penalties so it is as the scoreline suggests, a goal-fest. It appears that for the first time ever Eka will be a high scoring team this season, though we still look shaky at the back. Overall though, it's 3 wins in a row, equal to our total number of victories in all competitions last season and we've barely started.

But that's not the big news.

The fan club has confirmed the signing (probably a loan, but not confirmed) of Englishman Jorrin John from Muangthong United. Jorrin was a trialist at Leicester City, a large club playing in England's second tier, just three years ago where fans expected big things of him. With Leicester's Thai ownership, he took the unusual step of being loaned from England to Thailand. He was subsequently released by Leicester but impressed Muangthong enough to win a contract there. He was loaned out to Suphanburi last year and due to go on loan to TTM this year but the deal fell through. As such, he has ended up with Eka.

What this amounts to is an English player with experience of football at a far, far higher level and due to play at a higher league club ending up with us. It could be very interesting.

Just think, a few months back we weren't even sure if we had a club to support any more.

Eka play Samut Prakan United at home this Saturday. KO 4pm.

MTU Vs Raj - media

Credit: Siam Sport via rajprachanonthaburi.com
The MTU fan site forum has been down for a long time and there are no pictures on the Raj forum yet so it's not been easy to get any multimedia of yesterday's FA Cup game. The only circulated picture is the one above and the only video I know of is below. You can also download the whole game from here if you have enough free time thanks to a user by the name of ซุปเปอร์โด้ at thailandsusu.

This defeat at the feet of the Quilins brings Raj's tumultuous season to a close. It's had plenty of high and low points but overall, survival in the first division in a debut season and a strong cup run must be considered a success.

This blog will now go into close season mode with a couple of reflective articles followed by short, sharp updates until the hype for next season begins. The biggest question for Raj fans will be: will Raj return home next season?

Interview with a Rajpracha fan

Nene (wearing glasses)
As a follower of Rajpracha myself, it was comparatively easy to get an interview with a Rajpracha fan before the match between Muangthong and Raj.
So thanks then to Nene for his time. Bear in mind this interview was conducted before the game's original scheduled date about three millennia ago, so Raj's recent struggle - and victory - against relegation is not mentioned.

1) Could you tell us your nickname, your age and what you do for work?
A: Hi, My name is Ne'. I'm 27 and my work is about Information and Communication Technology study, research and educational services.

2) How long have you supported Rajpracha and why did you choose them?

A: I supported the team since the last year (2009) when the team has competed in Regional League D2, (Bangkok and Metropolitan zone) but I heard about the rich history of the team when I was young.
The reason that I choose to support the team because I find the one team that I really want to support and the team must locate around my home (Locality Loyalty reason) and I heard Rajpracha joined Nonthaburi and selected Nonthaburi Provincial Stadium (Wat Boat Don Prom) as a home stadium.
So I think this is a good chance to choose team that i want to be with.

3) Rajpracha were promoted last season as D2 Champions. How do you think they have performed in their first season in D1?

A: For the starting season period, I think we can perform quite well as a new promoted team but the situation of team is going down after we lost Prachinburi FC for away game 2-1 and the form continued poor results, we lost many matches.
We have many problems about the team management until we changed head coach from Praphan Premsri to Somchai Supperm and the thing is turning to good way that it could be.
For this season I just expect the team will be in mid-table and doing well in FA cup tournament.

4) How do you think most Raj fans feel about Muangthong United? Do they like them or do they see them as rivals (as English fans do with other local teams)?

A: I think most Raj fans don't think seriously to be rivals with MTUTD because this is Thailand we live as peace and we just want to enjoy and see the favourite team play well.
Sometimes I saw many of MTUTD fans supported Rajpracha and they enjoyed together.

5) Raj have played away from their real home ground this season and played at the Thunderdome instead. Why is this and how do fans feel about it?

A: Nonthaburi Provincial Stadium is under construction and improving for ready for football league competition. Most Raj fans is waiting to return back to real own stadium that they think they are.
Our team play at Thunderdome that really effect for local fans around our home ground.

6) What tactics do you think Rajpracha will play in this game? Who will be the key players for them?

A: I think we have to play carefully with the defensive approach and use counter attack style. MTUTD has many good skill players to threat us.
Did you know, few players of MTUTD is former players of Rajpracha when they were youngster.
My opinion, Raj key players for this match will be our foreign players (GK-Yen, DF-Dawuda, FW-Sylla).
They have strength and good techniques to resist the attacking game from MTUTD and we hope our striker will create a chance to turning this game.

7) Finally, do you have a prediction for the match?

A: Any result, I'm welcome. I just deeply hope Raj will pass to the final !!!

Thanks again to Nene for his time.

Rajpracha 2 Sriracha 0 - FA Cup

Raj moved in to the last eight with a dominating performance against a flat Sriracha side that avenged the recent league defeat.

Neutrals would be surprised to learn that Sriracha were the top side and Raj the strugglers of D1 as after the first five minutes, the home side always looked the stronger.

Both goals came in the first half - a penalty by Pontawee and a finish inside the box from Pantong.

The only surprise is that more goals did not come. Raj could easily have scored six or seven with better finishing as they knocked the ball around neatly and quickly for much of the game. Sriracha also had chances aplenty and lost out by some terrible finishing and yet another solid display by Yen Emile. It's a shame the stretcher had to appear so much in the second half as Raj really did not need to run down the clock. There was only one team in this game.

A couple of asides - Raj sported a different kit - similar to that of PEA Buriram - for reasons unknown and also appeared late for the second half. This has happened just once before.....in the league game against Sriracha.

The win means Raj are just one of two D1teams  in the hat for the quarter finals.

FA Cup - Raj 3 Prachinburi 1

 Tammasee - Opened the scoring

Raj continued their form revival and qualified for the forth round of the FA Cup with a win over a disappointing Prachinburi side.

Raj's line up was notable by the absence of goalkeeper Yen Emile. This was a worry as the reserve goalie let in three goals against (then ) bottom side PTT in his last showing. Thierry Touoyem was back in the side but this time as a defender, his natural position. Tammasee was finally given a chance to start a game.

The visitors actually made the brighter start but  around the twenty five minute mark a long cross found an unmarked Tammasee at the far post whose header looped over the goalie to make it 1-0.

Prachinburi equalised when Raj's stand in goalie flapped at a curled effort and allowed it into the top corner to make it 1-1 at half time.

But Raj dominated the second half and a close range side footed effort made it 2-1 with about five minutes left. Prachinburi responded by throwing more men forward giving the fans some traditional FA Cup action to enjoy. Raj responded by scoring yet another close range finish to seal the 3-1 win and the name in the hat for the next round.

Credit to Prachnburi for bringing good number of fans to this game, for wearing the ugliest home shirt I've ever seen - a lime green affair with the sponsor being 'Custard Cake' - and for their friendliness. Credit also to the ref who seems to have been blessed with the rarest of traits known as 'common sense'.

Today's starting lineup:

นพดล สุขดี GK
Thierry Rostand Kouodi Touoyem (DF)
Dawuda Wulampah (DF)

Suriya Kupalang (DF)

Raj 4 Bangkok Sanarak 0

Although the scoreline reflects the play, today's non-league opposition played with spirit and had chances of their own. However, it's Raj who progress through to the next round and mix with the big boys. Today's forth goal was scored by number nine,  Taiki Ishizu.

For the good it will do....

Dear sirs,

I write to you as an ex-patriot living in Thailand and a keen follower of Thai football. I was especially pleased to go along to my first Thai FA Cup match this season and I hope to see many more.

I was disappointed that many lower league teams, including my own local team of Nonthaburi FC, did not enter the competition. Apparently, many lower league teams find it hard and expensive to travel to FA Cup games and find the games are scheduled for difficult times.

I understand the Thai FA Cup is based around the English version, however in England, lower league teams are given financial and other assistance when organising cup matches home or away against other teams. This is seen by the FA and fans as a way of providing excitement to fans and increasing support for smaller teams. It also provides the famous 'FA Cup magic' when smaller teams take on bigger clubs and this is what the competition is known for.

I would encourage the Thai FA to take similar steps to ensure the FA Cup receives more lower league entrants.

Thank you and please keep up the good work!

Kind regards,
Greg
Nonthaburi

Game on tomorrow - Raj V Bangkok Sanarak

Raj V Bangkok Sanarak , 1800, Thunderdome

Raj are clear to get back to action tomorrow after the situation in Thailand has calmed somewhat. The Raj will be playing against Bangkok Sanarak in the FA Cup.

I know nothing about the opposition so no preview is possible. The Thai FA Cup is enjoying the second season of its renassance after being scrapped several seasons earlier. Sadly it seems few lower league teams will enter due to the lack of recompanse provided by the TFA (I'm going to email them about this) but Raj and Phuket and a few other smaller teams will still be hoping to provide a shock somewhere down the line.

FA Cup draw

Raj have been drawn at home to Bangkok Sananrak in the second round (before the first round proper).

Tie to be played May 12th.

Nonthaburi have not entered the contest. Indeed, most smaller clubs don't, because, unlike the UK, there is no financial reward for winning any games before the big rounds.

The FA Cup History

Thanks to instantkarma on the forum of Raj's Official Site, I can cofnirm that Rajpracha FC have won the Thai FA Cup five times:

1975, 1976, 1984, 1992 and 1994

1975 was the first year the Thai FA competition took place and Raj won the cup under the name of 'Youth Development Team '.

Instantkarma also pointed out some Raj players who used to play for MTU:
No.3 Suphat Onthong
No.7 Prakit Deeprom
No.24 Niwet Petchchamrat
No.34 Kanae Chan-im
